It is essential that the believer recognize the authority of
Christ. This authority not only extends over the believers life, but over all
things. Understanding this is imperative for an effective prayer life.
Understanding this will allow one to walk in faith and confidence as the Lord
has intended.
Luke 7 records the story of a centurion who had a servant
that was sick. The centurion had heard about Jesus and sent and asked Jesus to
come and heal him. After further thought the centurion sent some friends to
Jesus and said for him not to come but simply “say the word, and let my servant
be healed” (v. 7). He then goes on to explain that he is a man of authority and
understands how it works. When he speaks, people respond. He knew the same
would be true of Jesus. When Jesus spoke things happened.
Jesus says of this centurion, “I tell you, not even in
Israel have I found such faith” (v. 9). This was a man that believed that Jesus
could and would respond. Such a belief is essential to our prayer life. A lack
of belief will kill the joy of a believer. We must come to the point that we,
like the centurion, believe that Jesus can and will act. If we lack such faith,
we should not expect the Lord to move on our behalf. However, if we discover
this sort of faith, it will allow us to live with a sense of joy, confidence,
and expectation.
