An Invitation to a Journey

You are invited to go on a journey with me.  Over the next year, darrelltomasek.com will take a close look at Spiritual Leadership.  This journey into the aspects of Spiritual Leadership will focus closely on the concept of shepherding.  This is the dominant imagery that Scripture uses as it talks to us about leadership in our world.

Through this journey we will look closely at who we need to be, who God is, what God has called us to do, and what characteristics we need to embody.  These blog posts will primarily proceed out of my devotional reading each day.  My prayer is that God will use this time to sharpen me as a leader and maybe use it to touch you as well.

Some of you will say, “I’m not a leader.”  My contention is that all of us are leaders.  Whether it is in your home, at work, or simply in your interaction with friends, we are all leaders.  So, join me for the journey and let’s see what God does.

Living a Life of Impact: Dare to Delegate

When pursuing the call of God in our lives, it is imperative that we recognize that we will not be able to succeed alone.  In all our pursuits, there comes a time that we will have to bring others along to help us accomplish our tasks.  We will come to the point that we must “dare to delegate.”

In the third chapter of Nehemiah, we are given some guidance as to how to approach this:

Break the Job Up into Manageable Pieces
All of chapter 3 is a description of who worked where and what their boundary markers were.

Involve People from all Walks of Life
We like to work with people who think like we do, act like we do, and share a common world view with us.  However, it is interesting to note that Nehemiah involved people from all walks of life.  In verse 8 and 31 we see goldsmiths and perfumers, in verse 12 the son of a ruler, in verse 17 Levites, in verses 22 and 28 priests, and in verse 26 temple servants.  All of these people from different backgrounds, with different skills, have come together to successfully complete the task of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem.

Some will Choose Not to Participate
As Nehemiah discovered, there are some people, for whatever reason, no matter how noble the cause, no matter how solid the leadership, who will refuse to participate.  Verse 5 tells us that of the Tekoites: “their nobles would not stoop to serve the Lord.”  These nobles simply thought they were too good to participate in this sort of laborious task.

Face Challenges Head On
A leaders will face many challenges as he/she sets out to accomplish the task that God has given him/her.  Several things we learn from Nehemiah.

1. Keep your God-given call in mind.
2. Do not become discouraged and lose focus.
3. Keep moving forward.

N.O.E.L.

The following is a brief Gospel presentation that I used as part of our Christmas Musical this year.

Need – We all need a Savior.
Romans 3:23 – All have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God.

Opportunity – We have an opportunity for redemption.
Romans 10:9 – If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is
Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the
dead, you will be saved.

Experience – There is a vast difference between opportunity and experience.
Romans 10:13 – Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved.

Life – If you surrender to Christ, it is there you will find life.
John 10:10 – The thief comes only to steal and kill and
destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it
abundantly.
