In life there are certain things that you want to make sure
are in order. We want to make sure that we have insurance in place in case an
unexpected medical emergency arises. We want to make sure that our family knows
what our final wishes are if ever they are faced with terrible end of life
decisions. We want to make sure that others know who is to care for our
children if ever something happened to us. Such a list could be endless.
Sadly, one of the most important issues to consider is the
one likely put aside by most. It is an issue that we do not like to think
about. Thankfully, for our sake, someone had the courage to ask Jesus about it.
Luke 13:23 records it for us, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” This is
one of those questions that actually has several other questions hidden behind
it. “Lord, what do I have to do to be saved? Lord, is it hard to be saved? Is
there any chance I might qualify?”
Jesus’ answer is clear, “Strive to enter through the narrow
door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able” (Luke
13:24). Jesus then goes on to explain that people will depend on all sorts of
things to get them into heaven. However, none of these things will suffice.
Jesus said that he will say to them, “I tell you, I do not know where you come
from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!” (Luke 13:27).
The call of Christ is a call to relationship. It is not a
call to works or law keeping. It is a call to know him. It is a call to lay
aside everything we might otherwise depend on. We must endeavor to truly walk
in relationship with Christ. To know him. To trust him. To surrender to him. To
give him everything that we are and not look back.
