When pursuing the call of God in our lives, it is imperative
that we recognize that we will not be able to succeed alone. In all our pursuits, there comes a time that
we will have to bring others along to help us accomplish our tasks. We will come to the point that we must “dare
to delegate.”
In the third chapter of Nehemiah, we are given some guidance
as to how to approach this:
Break the Job Up into
Manageable Pieces
All of chapter 3 is a description of who worked where and
what their boundary markers were.
Involve People from
all Walks of Life
We like to work with people who think like we do, act like
we do, and share a common world view with us.
However, it is interesting to note that Nehemiah involved people from
all walks of life. In verse 8 and 31 we
see goldsmiths and perfumers, in verse 12 the son of a ruler, in verse 17 Levites, in verses 22 and 28 priests, and in verse 26 temple servants. All of these people from different
backgrounds, with different skills, have come together to successfully complete
the task of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem.
Some will Choose Not
to Participate
As Nehemiah discovered, there are some people, for whatever
reason, no matter how noble the cause, no matter how solid the leadership, who
will refuse to participate. Verse 5
tells us that of the Tekoites: “their nobles would not stoop to serve the Lord.” These nobles simply thought they were too
good to participate in this sort of laborious task.
Face Challenges Head
On
A leaders will face many challenges as he/she sets out to
accomplish the task that God has given him/her.
Several things we learn from Nehemiah.
1. Keep your God-given call in mind.
2. Do not become discouraged and lose focus.
