Two different times in the gospel of Luke it is recorded for
us that the disciples got into an argument about which of them was the greatest
(9:46, 22:24). Jesus tells them, in Luke
9:48 that, “he who is least among you all is the one who is great.” And again in 22:26, “let the greatest among
you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.” Jesus emphasizes his point by saying (22:27),
“I am among you as the one who serves.”
One does not have to look far today, with a discerning eye,
to see a competition that tends to go on amongst the followers of Christ. It is as if we, like the disciples, are
having an ongoing argument as to who is the greatest. We don’t do such things out in the open of
course, we disguise it to the best of our ability and hope that no one sees the
craziness that takes place within our hearts.
Let me encourage you to hear the words of Jesus. Relax and learn to be the one who
serves. Jesus did not call us to rule
those around us with the proverbial iron fist.
Jesus has called us to be servant leaders, shepherds. Relax into the God called role of encourager,
guide, and coach. Do not allow yourself
to slip into worldly patterns of leadership versus biblical patterns of
leadership. Be faithful to your call, faithful
to serve, and faithful to your Lord.
